☞ ARCHITECTURE: The Harlem Club House

The red terracotta and brick building on Malcolm X and 123rd Street was once the Harlem Club House. Built by the firm Lamb and Rich for the Protestant community of the Mount Morris Park area in 1889, the club disbanded about twenty years later and was eventually sold to the Bethelite Community Baptist Church in 1947. The really interesting detail of this building includes the tall chimneys, the spanish tiles on the roof and the bright green stained glass on the lower windows. The lower photo shows that there were originally balconies on the second floor. Located on 23 West 123rd Street and Malcolm X/Sixth Avenue, the building can be reached by the 2,3 train at 125th Street. The other famous Lamb and Rich building is the Corn Exchange Building which has seen better days: LINK
