☞ EAT: Saji's

Saji's is a Japanese food shop contender north of 96th Street that provides a purpose but easily missed. Even though it can not hold a torch to the Japanese restaurant row in the East Village, the food is a fair enough for those who miss their katsudon, tempura or curry take-outs. The one similarity to the old East Village is the gritty layers of varnish on the the wood floor and intense paint colors coating the well-worn interior (makes us kind of nostalgic). Saji's also makes sushi but we are not sure if this is the place to get it if one has particular expectations. Seating is limited and bar-style with an outside bench for those who desire less cramped quarters. Located in the former western reaches of Harlem on 256 West 109th Street between Amsterdam Ave and Broadway. Tel.(212) 749-1834. Take the 1 train to 110th Street. For more authentic Japanese with a sit-in environment, see the previous post on Sun Chan: LINK
