☞ SHOP: The Kalahari Opens New Retail Shop

The Kalahari in South Harlem has a bit of open retail space available and we noticed a new business moving in yesterday to one of the storefronts. The luxury building already has a boutique style mens salon next door and more luxury businesses were expected to come along. Surprisingly, a dollar store has decided to set up shop in one of the empty ground floor spaces. It's not clear what type of rent they are charging for the shop but one would think that attracting the right mix of commercial spaces would help increase the value of the building and the units on sale. Making a little less rent but having key businesses in place seems the better way to go than relying on the income of a cheaper, high-volume establishment. The Kalahari is on West 116th Street between 5th Avenue and Lenox. The closest train is the B,C at 116th Street. Photos by Ulysses

  1. What a shame. I wonder what the new residents feel about this. As difficult as it might be during these times to rent to a higher quality retailer/business, I predicted this might happen when clearly the Kalahari developer failed to obtain a value retailer when settling for the discount furniture store that opened there not too long ago. What's next? Another wig store or maybe a new fritters restaurant? Sky's the limit.

  2. the men's salon (bbraxton) appears to have closed for good. This new dollar store is a huge disappointment.

  3. And that furniture store is a rental/ripoff place for people who can’t afford to buy.

  4. Yeah, took a stroll inside the other day and sorry to say, but this place is a real disappointment and quite depressing. Same old cheap, unhealthy food and random household odds and ends. A real shame.

Is this building sold out, b/c this is a pretty poor advertisement.

  6. I totally agree. I go to the NYSC around the corner and decided to stop into DEALS on my way home one day. Very depressing - actually worse in terms of stock than some other "dollar stores" I have seen.

  7. BBraxton was not housed in the Kalahari; it is part of the retail space of 1400 5th Ave.
