☞ WALK: Police Auto Tower Moves South

Since high tech cameras are apparently too expensive (and controversial), the NYPD auto tower has been making the rounds recently. Yesterday, just a half block from Central Park and across the street from Harlem's most expensive condo building, New York's finest were staking the grounds at lower Lenox and 110th Street. Did something happen on this corner recently? Photo by Ulysses.

  1. ...."across the street from Harlem's most expensive condo building.."

Correction - I think you mean to say the building with Harlem's most expensive condos, as numerous other Harlem condo buildings were much more expensive (such as 5th on the Park, SOHA 118, etc).

..."New York's finest were staking the grounds at lower Lenox and 110th Street. Did something happen on this corner recently?"...

Yes, their on the lookout for brokers who swindled buyers like Jill Sloane, an executive vice president at Halstead Property, who broke a Harlem sales record when she helped sell a 4,000-square-foot penthouse for $8 million right there across the street.

Okay, maybe not "swindled", but nonetheless Halstead committed a crime. Why do I say this? Well Charlie Lewis said it best, when he said in the NYO on 12/1/08, "Nobody's dying to get there," said Charlie Lewis, a senior vice president at Warburg Realty, who specializes in Harlem deals. "When it comes down to it, there's no market because it's almost like a little nondescript area. It's just a great place to be for park views, but there's no neighborhood." [End of quote]

So maybe, just maybe the cops are on the lookout for a neighborhood. Perhaps neighborhoods don't exist until the median income is $100K+, I don't know what exactly Mr Lewis is saying, however is there a tip line I can call? I swear I saw a neighborhood there, the last time I was there.

  2. Anonymous, I think you are looking for Curbed, the real estate blog. But hey, thanks for venting and have a nice day.

  3. Like most things for sale, unless someone buys it...it's worth nothing. Sorry 5th on the Park.

  4. Another cowardly post by...Anonymous! Entitled to your opinion, but at least be brave enough to identify yourself otherwise it just comes across as more than a little childish.

  5. The intent of the question in the original post was to ask if anyone knew of a crime or crimes that had been recently reported to the police. (It was not meant as an opening for snarky real estate b.s. by the bitter and disgruntled among us.) I know that someone was robbed at gunpoint in her apt. on 111th St. about a month ago but I have heard of nothing since. Is the tower there just as a deterrent against drug dealing? I have not seen many dealers in South Harlem in a year or more - maybe the odd guy on a street corner but nothing serious or lasting.

  6. There seems to be a real enforcement effort going on on lower Lenox Ave: actual arrests by cops getting out of their cars to interact with perps/suspects. The Tower of Fun should roll a couple of blocks north and check out the open air drug market at 113th Street.

  7. Good to know they are on top of things these days.

  8. In all honesty Harlem needs cameras all over, people need to know that ill behaviour will be monitored. I know I'll get slated about the "hood" and all that crap but I am no fan of crime.

  9. Wow - if you hadn't mentioned the streets, I'd never know you were talking about MY neighborhood...where there's a regular domino game going on the sidewalk on 112th St and the skateboard kids use the area near the #2/#3 to practice - and the donut stand sits right next to the fruit stand - across the street from our ice skating rink. Anony, you need one of my Harlem Maps - which clearly indicates OUR neighborhood & the people who live in it.
Unlike other parts of Manhattan, we are not a very transient neighborhood - and so most of my neighbors have been here for years, if not generations. There's an elderly fellow who puts a chair out on ACP between 111th/112th St - why don't you pull up a chair next to him some sunny afternoon. You'd be close to our newly renovated 112th St Deli - best $3.50 sandwich in this part of Town.

  10. Call 311, it's easy and the more people who call, the more quickly things will change. If you see a drug deal in progress, 311 will put you directly through to 911. You will be asked more questions if you report that a deal is in progress but still it only takes about 5 minutes of your time. And you do not ever have to give your name.

  11. Lynn, I pass through that way most weekends now taking the wee fella for a walk to Central Park. Ten minute stroll from 122nd and definitely more of a community vibe than many other parts of Manhattan. Haven't tried the sandwich though!

  12. The NYPD tower has been there all week. I think I heard there were a string of muggings that they were trying stave off.

  13. Just before the time of this post, they were staked on 114 and Powell for what seemed like a few weeks. Cops at the corner denied access to me and my family to even walk down the block between Powell and Douglas unless we lived on the block. I thought that was crazy.

A few nights ago at 114 and St. Nick, there were shots fired (not police) at about 2am -- woke me right up. Neighbors say it was gambling related, over a matter of a few hundred dollars. I don't think anyone took a bullet, but a car got a hole in the windshield, and one in the fender. Perhaps the tower will come to my block next. While it is an eyesore, I can only hope that the process will result in a safer Harlem.

BTW -- I googled "harlem police tower" and it brought me back to this blog. Thanks for such a great community resource.
