☞ DWELL: 721 St. Nicholas Avenue Up For Sale

After years of neglect and decay, one of the most notable Sugar Hill buildings is currently on the market. We passed the Thayer and Robinson designed houses this weekend and noted that No. 721 at the corner of St. Nicholas Avenue and 146th Street was up for sale. The antiques dealer that owns the property mentioned a year ago that he had been too busy to fix it up and apparently has realized that it should really go to somebody else if the building is ever going to survive. The 22 foot wide, 6,797 square foot property is basically a shell with the roof collapsed and much of the interior gutted of any original details. We haven't found the listing price yet so anyone with a tip should feel free to enlighten us. The local community board also might want to note that this corner was left out of the extended Sugar Hill landmark district in 2000 so they might want to do something about that. The property is only half a block away from the express A,B,C,D train at 145th Street. Check out our past post on this section of Sugar Hill: LINK. Photo by Ulysess

  1. I'm sure Evan Blum got gutted them and is selling those original doors and windows to his customers. People like that should be slapped with neglect fines right away.

  2. He's been trying to sell these buildings for at least three years. He got them for a song and wants waaaaay too much money. Every "would be" developer has seen them and the numbers just don't work for the space and the headache of the squatters.

  3. You left the most interesting part of this story out: The original function of this building; it is not a brownstone but a former elite elementary school that was operated by Barnard college
