☞ INTRODUCING: The Cotton Club's Newer Sign

We pointed out that the third incarnation of the Cotton Club removed its iconic circular Art Deco sign sometime back in spring and that the new digital screens were blank squares when turned off for most of the day. Walking by the far West 125th Street last week, a slight improvement on the lack of signage seemed to have surfaced. One of the said blank black squares at the front corner of the triangular building now has the club's original lettering posted at the top of the digital screen. With all said and done, we still kind of miss the old one. Check out our past post to compare the new to the old: LINK. The closest subway to this location is the 1 train at 125th Street. 2. Not sure why they thought that awful video screen would be an improvement.

  3. Any digital screen is terrible. I remember when the animated signage in Blade Runner was supposed to represent a Distopia. However, in some weird way, it has morphed into something positive. By and large they are all distracting and ugly.

  5. This place is a crap hole. Why can't it just be razed? There is nothing historical about the building or location. I never see anyone go in.

  6. It was initially in the footprint of Columbia's Manhattanville plan but was subsequently excluded by Columbia. They probably removed it from the plan out of fear that there would be community backlash against the destruction of a perceived Harlem landmark (even though this is not the original, famous Cotton Club).

  7. Ridiculous. This awful building is used for nothing but black gangs laundering money from the drug trade. No one goes there and no one good plays there. It's like the Bada Bing! (Sopranos) of Harlem.

  8. 2:32 -- Presumably CU might pick it up eventually? No doubt it would have to come at a premium, now that the cat is out of the bag.
