☞ EAT: A Preview of FDB's Bad Horse Pizza

There was quite a buzz with the announcement of Bad Horse Pizza arriving at FDB and 120th but what type of pizzeria will this be?  Typical take-out or a little bit of an upgrade?  Visually compelling name aside (horse meat is actually served in Italy albeit in the delicacy category), a connected reader sent a twitter upload from the proprietors of the new soon-to-arrive eatery and it looks a little more promising: LINK.  There's a quote under the image that states "product development never tasted so good" and we kind of think this actually might be going somewhere.  It's at least not the typical slice and what appear to be a fresh cut mozzarella pie with large slabs of cheese shows a more artisanal aesthetic. That said, the logo of the place could be tweaked a little (current graphics are oddly anemic for such a bold name) but the food looks like it's coming along.   Read last Friday's post for more information on the Bad Horse: LINK

  1. OR, they’re trying so hard to be hip it’s going to backfire.

    Let’s hope not.

  2. Why's the round pizza sitting in a square bakery pan? Harlem, the land of bad horses, red roosters, & dinosaurs....who knew?

  3. SM: The pizza prototype looks good to me, at least -- and I tend to think the degree of social-media connectedness they're already demonstrating here is a good sign.

"Hip" can be a good thing, but it has to be accompanied by business savvy. At least a few recent local ventures appear to have been doomed to failure by some amount of cluelessness about their basic business model (think Tribal Spears cafe, or the two wing places that rapidly flamed out).

"Trendy" places like Levain Bakery -- and yes, even a trendy pizza joint -- will almost certainly get traction here and succeed. The key is execution and whether the quality of their offering will be consistent.

Anyone who doubts this should take a stroll by Bier International at most any time of day and week...

  4. @Sanou's Mum:

As long as they aren't serving ground glass in the pizzas, I have a hard time seeing them fail, faux hipness or no. :)

Its not like there's much competition around there. Now if it was a flash Italian joint they'd have a problem.

  5. And if the name is in fact a reference to Dr. Horrible (as Mad Joy has suggested in the previous thread), they're already winning a significant amount of nerd cred...

  6. Ulysses,

There are a number of successful wineries that have the weirdest of weird names. If they can do it, why can't Bad Horse Pizza do it?

  7. Two Boots did it. Why not Bad Horse?

  8. FYI -- based on a whois query of the newly registered badhorsepizza.com domain, and some Googling of the details, it appears that the folks behind the Bad Horse venture are the owners of Zanny's Cafe on 108th & Columbus (www.zannyscafe.com).

  9. Is that good or bad?

  10. Sanou's Mum, looking at their site (zannyscafe.com) and reading the reviews on Yelp it would seem this will be a real boon for the neighborhood. Zannys looks like a pretty down to earth, friendly place for being to hang out. Hopefully the vibe here will be the same.
