☞ INTRODUCING: 229 Lenox New Facade Debut

We first covered 229 Lenox over a year ago when the new owner started the townhouse renovation and it now looks as if the end of the project is near.  The top photo shows the former church building between 122nd and 121st Street when the plywood went up in August 2009 and the building was mostly concealed behind scaffolding for most of 2010 (middle photo).  Walking past the house this weekend, we noticed that the upper part has now been revealed with freshly repointed bricks, new windows and what appears to be gray primer on the cast metal portions (which used to be painted red).  Based on DOB paperwork, the top levels will be a single family layout and the ground floor space has a gallery planned for it. Check out our previous post for more archival images of the this facade: LINK

  1. Wish they'd sprung for curved glass for the windows. But good to see it saved from dereliction.

  2. Curved glass window are considered custom and cost a mint; that may explain why they did not go that route....maybe in the future.

  4. Pleased to see this grande dame is being preserved, and adding street life to Lenox with a gallery. This building is a favorite of mine being so unique. I hope the interior details are also being restored.

  5. I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly, if we could get some of the criminal element removed as well we that entire stretch of Lenox really is a sight to behold. My only wish is that I had the funds to take on one of these grand old structures.

  7. Glad to see the restoration of Historic Harlem moving from the side streets to the avenues. This is the inevitable next step and will go far in changing the feel as stores and businesses will be located on the Avenues.
