The Convent Avenue Baptist Church on the corner of 145th Street and Convent Avenue is proposing to build an elevator shaft addition but the design of the new structure was met with mixed feelings at a recent CB9 meeting. A Community Board 9 landmarks committee barely approved the church's planned $1.4 million granite and glass elevator building (lower photo) that would rise in one of the most pristine parts of the Hamilton Heights Historic District. After getting approval from the community board, the proposal will then have to go to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for anything to officially happen. On a side note, the architect probably should come up with a new rendering using a modern image instead of the 1980's tax photo of the lot if they want to make an good impression with the tough NYC Landmarks Commission. Wow, talk about making an ugly rainy day worse. In order to build that horribly depressing addition, they'll have to tear down one of the most beautiful trees in New York. It has started to bud already, and should be in full flower in a few weeks.

ReplyDeleteWow, where did that architect go to school? (Something suggests for-profit college?) Obviously the church is working on a tight budget. Thank God! they're not proposing that ugly thing on my block.
