☞ EAT: Some Activity Over at Louise's

The shuttered Harlem diner called Louise's appears to have had some activity on site this past week.  It has been at least a couple of years since the shop at No. 217 Lenox Avenue was closed down for health violations and many lamented the shuttering of another Harlem soul food restaurant that had been around for decades.  Based on the work happening at the corner of West 121st Street, folks might expect another opening in the Mount Morris Park Historic District  of lower Lenox Avenue in the near future.

Permits are up on the window but will the old drop ceiling, formica counter diner change over to a new venue? Based on the paperwork approved last month, apparently the storefront will be refurbished, have its plumbing fixed up and acquire new drop ceiling panels. Louise's is not mentioned at all so this might just be a general fix-up to get a new tenant in.  The one interesting thing to note are the shelving units being added which seem very specific for the space. For those not familiar with the original Harlem eatery, check out the Times article on Louise's back in 2008 with photos of the interior: LINK

  1. I walked by a couple weeks ago and the Spanish speaking workman said it would be a deli.

  2. I saw them working there as well.

Deli. Spanish for bodega. We need another bodega there like a pig needs a side saddle.

  3. Perhaps it will be a "gourmet" deli. Or are you thinking something more

  4. Hah! I IS a picture of a pig wearing a side saddle. Wish I knew my college roommate’s email address. One of her favourite terms, years ago. She was from RidgleyTennesseeit’sahundrdmilesnorthofMemphis. One word.

But face it, the harlem jake, ALL delis are gourmet these days. Just like all condos are ‘luxury’.

  7. would be a great place for a moderately priced restaurant. Two large churches, one with Saturday services, close to 125 and its tourists and businesses, right across from Owen’s Funeral home. . .

Maybe the worker was wrong. I guess we will see in time.

  12. I spoke to them as well, and they said it was going to be a bodega. I begged them to keep the Louise's sign up. I love that sign!
