☞ CELEBRATE: The Frederick D. Circle Dedication

It has been open over a year now but we just received information that Frederick Douglas Circle will finally have an official dedication ceremony on Tuesday, September 20th at 11:00 AM.  The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation along with Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris will host the ceremony at the Frederick Douglass Circle on the corner West 110th Street by Central Park North.  Mayor Bloomberg may also be present but has not confirmed yet.  There is no word yet if the fountain detail will be running yet since this has been an ongoing maintenance issue: LINK

  1. I certainly hope that the star map can light up at night. And if there is a fountain, I would like to see that up and running also. We have so many lovely statues and heraldic ornaments in this city and very few of them light up at night. It really would go a long way to beautifying the city.

My last visit to Paris, I noticed that the statues and fountains light up at night and it really is lovely. I think they extinguish the lights about mid night and thats ok. The underpass at West 151st Street and ACP has those lovely globe lamps and posts that should be lit up at night. That whole under pass should be renovated/refurbished and that would be a lovely exit/entrance into Harlem.

Does anyone out there know who does one see about something like this?

  3. All I know is they have been 'fixing' this for the past few months and still have a few cars parked out there all day, every day. How much $$$ have they already burnt through? No wonder the city is broke.

  4. I'm delighted this is happening, but, again, it is horrible piece of work. Badly proportioned, poorly cast, roughly sculpted -- a hideous piece of art! With so many talented craftsmen in the world, this is the best we can do?

  5. BTW All, looks like I spoke too soon. I got my wish in reference to the lamps along the overpass at West 151st St. & ACP Blvd. They have installed new ones and they are very simple but lovely. They aren't lit up yet, but I suppose thats next. The original ones were lovely and would have made a great impression in reference to exiting or entering Harlem at night but i guess they were too far gone.
