☞ REMEMBER: 116th Street & Pleasant c. 1885

A view of looking West at 116th on the corner of Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem circa 1885 shows the small town feel of the neighborhood before larger building moved into the area.  picket fences line both sides of the street and road apparently was mostly dirt at this part of town. There are also very large trees present that virtually conceal this corridor during the warmer season.  Today this side street consists mostly of old tenement buildings standing alongside a few brownstones.

  3. I love these old photos of verdant, semi-rural Harlem too. It would be wonderful to live in an uptown neighborhood of Manhattan that looked like this today.
