☞ REVIVE: 58 East 126th Demolition Begins

There was a lot of controversy when papers reported on the plight of 58 East 126th Street in the past weeks but that still has not helped neighbors halt the demolition of the century-old brownstone. A Bespoke reader snapped the above photo this morning which shows the demo crew on site and inside the property on the historic residential block by the East Harlem border of Central Harlem.  This neighborhood located between Madison and Park is one of those rare areas in Manhattan that has brownstones completely intact on both sides of the street but now there will be empty lot in the near future.  The block association has been trying to reach out to the owner for years now and even considered buying the property but any communication was met by silence.  Read more about the battle to save 58 East 126th Street in the New York Times: LINK

  1. This block should have been landmarked, I am sure the Block Association considered this, I wonder why it did not happen and what is the process?

  2. Landmarking wouldn't have saved the building; once it gets as decayed as this shell, the city would tear down even a landmarked structure.

  3. if its "calendered" at Landmarks , then it cannot be demolished.

really really sad. Something clearly could have been done. How about contribute the few extra dollars to stabalize the facade? where are the politicians? the block? Shaming the owner? very sad indeed.

  4. Too bad! Another beautiful building will bite the dust. The power's that be probably already has the land sold and ready for another ugly all glass replacement.

  5. I'm going to swim against the current here -- these are low-end brownstones and the block ends with an ugly view of the metro north tracks over Park Avenue. It's not like somebody has bulldozed Convent Avenue here.
