☞ SHOP: What's Up With Lenox Wines?

Everyone has been asking about what is going on with Lenox Wines on the west side of Lenox Avenue and 130th Street but the explanation appears to be really simple.  A Bespoke reader saw some activity at the shop in Central Harlem and took a photo of the sign on the front door. It now appears that the shuttered wine shop is actually just going through some renovations and will be open sometimes in the near future. Anyone have additional information?

  1. I have heard a much more complicated tale involving law suits, liquor license, etc. I'll see what I can confirm and report back.

  2. There was an official notice from a tax assessor posted a few weeks ago, stating that the store owed thousands in back taxes and the property had been levied until the taxes were paid. The place looks so sad with all that torn paper up. Wonder what the landlord is doing about this.

  3. "renovating" is so often code for 'closing but trying to save face'

  4. Agree with all the above. Don't believe they're renovating. No way would they close up shop for so long. I was never impressed by this place.

  5. Well this "renovation" doesn't surprise me. I bought some wine there last year and I found the guy who worked there to be arrogant and rude ! Like I was doing HIM a favor ! I never stepped foot in the place again...

  6. Ms Ciara, I had a similar experience at LW. The man working was really rude to me. I vowed never to go back. But I went back this winter because I needed a bottle and didn't have time to go anywhere else and this really nice young man was working. Because of him, I gave them another chance. But, I guess it's moot now since they're closed. The "renovation" sign is new. The torn up paper is at the place next door, isn't it? THat space has been empty for a while. Anyway, it's sad that they're closed - I wasn't LW's biggest fan, but they were great in a pinch.

  7. I host dinner parties often and it was such a convenient shop for my guests to pick up a bottle on their way from the subway to my place. I had one this past weekend and everybody commented on how sad it was that it was closed.

  8. My understanding is that someone has put in a license to put a wine bar at the location. There is a notice for said license in the window. Supposedly Lenox Wines is moving a block or two north on Lenox. I miss having them in the neighborhood. It's better than picking wine from behind bulletproof glass.
