A new scaffold went up again at number 243 Lenox Avenue in the Mount Morris Park Historic District and this just might be the year that the landmark brownstone receives a final fix. This brownstone is the last one to be restored on the block just north of 122nd Street and the two adjacent buildings have had complete gut renovations in the past couple of years. New permits have been filed in the past couple of months and it appears that the facade is basically the part that needs the most help at this point in time.
Rumor has it that the owner was pressured by the city, via violations, into dealing with the structure. Ever since the house on 123rd St collapsed, the DOB officials have been walking the beat, and notifying any building owner to deal with their deteriorating buildings... or else. They are also closely watching all construction projects. All I can say is that it's about time! Now owners are going to have to maintain or sell.
ReplyDeleteGood to see this magnificent row of supersize brownstones being brought back. Also good to see the first store front, Harlem Haberdashery. This would be a great location for a coffee shop / cafe with sidewalk seating.
