Harlem's Lafayette Theatre appears to be on the brink of
total demolition towards the end of 2012 and thus we take another look back at Orson Welles' groundbreaking production of Macbeth set in Haiti that debuted at that said theater back in 1936. The above photos and sketches are some rare images of the young director's Harlem production which would have the city look uptown once again as a key player in the arts. The all black cast was something never before seen at this point in time for a major Shakespeare play and the performances would sell out night after night.
