☞ BESPOKE: Painted Townhouse Doors

There is nothing like rich woodwork as a design element within a townhouse but sometimes a little paint can add some excitement to an otherwise sombre color palette.  The above photo is that of a Sugar Hill house on St. Nicholas Avenue which has been renovated with a vibrant blue accent color for the front door.  Most Harlem townhouses have neutral brownstone or limestone facades so this hit of color really makes many homes more vibrant in their overall appearance.  Other popular hues for entrance doors include rich reds and saturated greens.

  1. Nice to see a little color but for me nothing beats the patina of 100 year old natural wooden doors. Good door hardware also makes a great statement. A great way to add a splash of color is with the window boxes or stoop planters.

  2. Color on the doors is very appropriate in a European vernacular, which presumably was the aspiration of many if not all the building developers in Harlem back in the mid- to late- 1880s. The color is dynamic and adds that nice bit of drama!
