☞ REMEMBER: The Claremont circa 1915

An image from 1915 shows what the Claremont Theatre at 135th and Broadway used to look like in the days it actually played moving pictures.  We are not sure how long The Claremont has been dormant as a public event space but one can see from the lower photo that this local West Harlem landmark is used just for storage today.  With that said, this old architectural gem is still one of the most striking buildings on this part of Broadway second only to the Hamilton Theatre: LINK

  2. The location has undergone a complete gutting and renovation. The main space now serves as a pediatric clinic called Pediatrics 2000.

  4. The Claremont ceased showing movies in 1933 according to its Cinema Treasures entry. It has served several uses since then: automobile showroom, clothing store, furniture store, storage space, and now a pediatric clinic.

It was even featured in a scene (decorated as a circa-'60's retail store) in 2007's "American Gangster".

  6. We have some great independent movie houses in NYC, including our very own Maysles, this would make a wonderful indy cinema.
