☞ EAT: Coccola Opens on 139th and Amsterdam

Bespoke readers have been sending in tips about Coccola on 139th Street and now it appears the eatery has opened.  We walked by this section of Amsterdam Avenue across from City College in Hamilton Heights and noticed that the restaurant was already providing lunch service.  Coccola reportedly is owned by the guys the brought about Bettolona in Manhattanville and it appears that the menus are similar.  Expect pizza out of wood-burning oven and pasta dishes all within around the $10 price point. Brunch menus are also up so folks can drop buy during the weekends.

  1. Oops! "Paste" instead of "Pasta". Hope they don't know something we don't.

  2. Paste is plural for pasta in Italian

  3. We ate here the other day. It was great. My pizza (the antonio I believe) was fresh, cheap and delicious. The decor is a bit sparse but the service was really good (especially considering the place is brand new). Clearly owned by Italians, I will definitely be eating here more than once a month.

The place was about half full for lunch. I imagine it will get busier as word gets out.

  4. When I first heard about this place I was really excited. Then I heard the pricing, and thought it sounds a bit pricy to be across the street from City College. I went tonight (Saturday), the food was terrific, but the place was dead. There were only 2 other tables there on a Saturday evening. I think this place would have been packed if they had opened across from Harlem Public. I really hope this place succeeds (it's the first quality pizza place in the area)- but if they don't it will be an issue of location and not a reflection on the food. Amsterdam seems to be a challenge for new restaurants up here, and there isn't much foot traffic over there when the school is closed.

  5. Ate there last night! The food and staff were great. Place opened last Tues. so they are still figuring things out. Menu has a few typos.

a welcome addition to the neighborhood. i've lived in the hood for the last six years and this is the first of it's kind on Amsterdam. Covo was first down on 12 Ave by Fairway, then Truffa on Broadway a few years ago and now Coccola!

  6. Ate there yesterday. It was great and very inexpensive for what you got. Much better priced than Covo. I love the ambiance too.

  7. It is great-- calamari, pizza, nutella calzone, some good cheap wine-- but does it come with a gym membership???

  8. This restaurant is just slightly further away than Bettolona for me. I feel like I would be more tempted to go there if the menu were more substantially different from Bettolona. Mostly if there were an exciting vegetarian pasta dish or something...
