☞ BESPOKE: A Townhouse Garage

We have mixed feeling about having a car in the city but some townhouse owners eschew public transportation and thus decide to build a garage into their historic homes .  This reconfiguration happens a lot in Brooklyn so we were surprised to see one such arrangement on a block adjacent to the Mount Morris Park Historic District.  With that said, if one had to go this route, we would suggest maybe choosing flat paneled doors to mimic traditional woodwork or allude to carriage house doors.

  1. An article that I read a while ago suggested that the main obstacle to these townhouse garages is the inability to obtain permission to cut the curb for access. Neighbors tend to resist the loss of street parking. Is this still the case?

  2. Having a private garage is a major luxury in NYC. Agreed, the door itself is difficult as it must offer security and also look period appropriate, the few I have seen look a little weird.
