☞ REMEMBER: Grant's Tomb circa 1890

The original Grant's Tomb circa 1890 was located on 123rd Street and Riverside Drive but a bigger monument would come years later for the West Harlem location.  Grant passed away five years earlier and had requested to be buried in New York City.  The modest monument served as tomb until the larger building was constructed and finished by 1897 based on the designs of architect John Hemenway Duncan.  Grant's Tomb was an even bigger tourist attraction than the Statue of Liberty in the early part of the 20th century but today sits quietly on the hill looking over the Hudson unbeknown to many New Yorkers.
