REVIVE: HARLEM ACADEMY AT 655 ST. NICHOLAS

The private school called The Harlem Academy announced earlier this year that it will be the anchor tenant at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue.  Harlem Academy is not a public charter but apparently a school that is now located at 111th and Fifth Avenue which is entirely privately funded.  The new residential building located  between 143rd and 145th Street has yet to rise but will eventually will have around 111-units.  Usually community organizations are required as anchor tenants for many of these new developments so the Harlem Academy appears to be a perfect fit.  As far as an opening date is concerned, it will be a while since 2017 or 2019 has been the estimate at this point in time.  Read more about Harlem Academy in the official press release: LINK

  1. It sounds like maybe the school will occupy the whole building. Nice that a Rafael Vinoly design is coming to St. Nicholas.

  3. Does anyone know the latest on how this will impact Harlem School of the Arts which is right next door? Earlier plans called for demolition of the HSA theater, is there still plans for them to get a new theater out of the development? It would be so great (and very needed) and seems like there could be nice synergy between HSA and Harlem Academy.

  4. Hey uotownNYCsupport. It is mentioned on the Harlem Academy's website that they will be joining forces with Harlem School of the Arts to offer after school and summer programs. The theater is still set to be part of the new construction. The old theater will be demolished and replaced by a new one built in the new construction.
