REVIVE: MORE WORK AT PS186 SITE

A Bespoke reader sent in the above photo yesterday of workers at the abandoned PS186 site up on 145th Street in Hamilton Heights.  This former public school has been vacant for decades and the long-delayed plans to convert the building into housing looks like it might be coming to fruition.  Some might recall that a local church organization purchased the property from the government over 20 years ago with an agreement to have it fixed up relatively soon.  Everyone in the community is now crossing their fingers that 2014 will begin a new era for this century-old school building that is quite literally one of the grandest in Hamilton Heights. Right now, it looks like the only thing really going on is cleanup and maintenance of the site which was previously overgrown by trees.  More in our past post: LINK

  1. Charter schools just raised a ton of $ on wall street the other night. I say give it to Eva Moskowitz and make her fix it up with all her $ and use it for a charter school.

  2. The current plan is to restore the current exterior and turn it into a condo building of about 80 units. They also plan to put a Boys and Girls club on the ground floor in the back.

  4. As a lifetime resident, I can always remember this school abandoned! It would be great to have a new great school of any kind not just charter, as we know district 6 is the forgotten. But as a working parent I hope the housing is not only for new money buyers but also for working families who would like better choices they can afford.
