BESPOKE: A STANDARD CAST IRON STAIRCASE

The north end of the Metro North station on 125th Street is due for a  major renovation in the near future and we noticed something quite familiar while checking out this location on a past excursion.  All of the old cast iron staircases appear to be the exact same model as many of the tenement stairwells that we have seen in Harlem so they must have been a standard issue that was mass produced over a 100 years ago.  It is also quite fascinating to see such a decorative style at an outdoor space but every design element was consider important back in the early decades of the past century and even such a modest mass transit stairwell deserved as much attention as a more formal residential interior.

  1. I have noticed similar ornate metal stairs in NYC buildings with the name Carnegie on them, I assume these stair components were produced by the Carnegie Steel Company.
