BESPOKE: PRESERVING ORIGINAL TOWNHOUSE DETAILS

A Bespoke reader sent in the this great photo of some gorgeous original detail being removed from a brownstone renovation project on 131st Street.  For major interior restorations, contractors often do this to protect the woodwork during construction which often entails brand new walls and electrical wiring or even ventilation ducts.  This is the most probable reason the wainscot is being removed but owners sometimes want an entirely cheap white-box reno and just decide to sell the woodwork to make things easier.
