READ: STUDIO MUSEUM EXPANSION IN THE TIMES

The Times reports that The Studio Museum in Harlem will be adding 10,000 square foot to its current location by demolishing the existing building (top photo) and building a new structure combining the adjacent lot.  Construction will start in 2017 and the ambitious new construction should be complete by 2019.  Notable architect David Adjaye has been selected for the $122 million project which will rise on 125th Street just east of 7th Avenue.  More details in the New York Times: LINK

  1. Isn't that the same architect that designed that hideous gray jailhouse looking building in the 150s? I biked past there the other day and it was even worse in person!

  2. UGLY! Existing building should be a Landmark. Just add more floors.

  4. This ain't good news. On the one hand if they add additional space perhaps this is done to provide additional studio space for artists and add additional exhibition space for artists' work. Also, interactive exhibitions, space for seminars & learning, library space, a/v space are all things that probably are coming through. But the downside is Mr. Adjaye as the architect. I'm so not a fan of his work but perhaps he may redeem himself through this project.
