BEST RESTORATION 2016: PS186 ON 145TH STREET

It took three decades but local grassroots efforts to push for the restoration of PS186 in Hamilton Heights finally finished up this year.  The city abandoned the historic building on 145th Street over 30 years ago and the neglect was so bad that a forest of trees had been growing out of the collapsed rooftop.  After two years of construction, the newly restored building located just east of Broadway is now historically accurate in every detail on the outside and even had the cornice replaced.  This was also another win for the community since affordable housing had been put in place which goes to show historic preservation can work with this type of adaptive reuse development.  More on the history of PS186 can found in our past post: LINK
