DEMOLITION: THE FORMER CITARELLA ON 125TH

Harlem Bespoke: Whole Foods finally debuted in Harlem this year but some might remember that another high end supermarket arrived years before on 125th Street by Amsterdam Avenue.  We the walked by the recently demolished building this week and came to the conclusion that the entire venture was basically an exercise in bad timing.  Citarella had rights to the property as a retail storefront but also was supposed to establish a factory behind the address as part of a Manhattanville revival project setup by the city.  The recession hit and things never got off the ground which snowballed into an eviction notice to vacate the location in West Harlem.  Manufacturing has still not taken off in the former industrial section of the neighborhood and it is still unclear if it will ever come back again.  For more on the Citarella story, check out our past post: LINK
