Food is a powerful social network binding New Yorkers to each other and with countless others across the globe. The city's raucous restaurant scene; its ubiquitous street food; the current activist efforts to source food locally; the world's largest food market in Hunts Point; and the artists, thinkers, and designers who are imagining new sustainable ways to relate to food, will all be part of Food in New York: Bigger Than the Plate. The exhibition will examine the challenging nodes and networks of the city’s food systems. Anchored around issues of sustainability, labor justice, and equitable access to food, the show will explore the ways in which artists and designers are developing solutions to these global and local challenges. Through September, 2023. Harlem Bespoke: Who is known as the Father of Harlem and where did he live? Below is one our original post mentioning the Home of Phillip A. Payton Jr. which still stands today in Central Harlem.

Number 13 West 131st Street just west of Fifth Avenue has windows that look like a Jack O'Lantern face but is also notable for being the former home of the Father of Harlem. Phillip A. Payton Jr. founded the Afro-American Realty Company during a time when the financial market crashed in 1904 and would bring the black community uptown to brand new homes that were built in a speculative boom when the subways were constructed. Desperate developers could not refuse the opportunity and African-Americans who formerly lived in the gritty Tenderloin section of midtown saw an opportunity to live in a brownstone neighborhood which was not accessible previously. More on the incredible story of the black broker can be found in our past post: LINK
Harlem Bespoke: The goats are back at Riverside Park and West 120th Street on the upper level! Did you know the word Gotham basically means goat town? Harlem was known as a village full of goats before the brownstones arrived by the end of the 1800s and now everything has gone full circle.

Check out these guys for free all summer starting Wednesday, July 7th at 11:00AM when the official Running of the Goats welcomes the seasonal guests to Riverside Park at Morningside Heights just a couple of blocks south of Grant's Tomb. There are five all together helping to eat up all the weeds in the park which means do no feed them and also no petting. Harlem Bespoke: After selling for $1.9 million back in 2020 during the start of the pandemic, Number 465 West 144th Street in Hamilton Heights is now back on the market for a cool <strike>$2.5 </strike>$2.1 million. So what is different this time around? The listing mentions that everything is in a multi-family layout and a Certificate of No Harrassment in place so an SRO situation might have been the case in the past. With that said, that would mean the next owner can start with changing the layout right away and there lies the new value of the apparent fixer-upper. As previously mentioned, this is one of the rarely available landmark townhouses on the block of West 144th Street between Convent and Amsterdam Avenue which is one of our favorite blocks in all of the city. There have been a couple of stories on the old Silver Rail Bar just below 125th Street on 8th Avenue in the past but Bespoke readers are the ones who have revealed the forgotten LGBT history at some of Harlem's establishments in 70s, 80s or 90s. This block would eventually be demolished for the big glassy Harlem USA complex but before that happened, 2321 8th Avenue became Andre's which appears to haves been the spot for the gay community to socialize.

Andre's filled-in where the Silver Rail left off and did very well. Another gay bar on 125th St. was known as Jay's and lets not forget the Big Apple. All three catered to a particular sub-set within the black gay culture of Harlem. The Big Apple catered to older, middle-aged gay black men while Andre's was known for its demimonde and Jays catered to everyone else including hustlers.
Apparently everything was intact in the 90s but by 1996, the $56 million Harlem USA mall complex would cause the demise of the old buildings on the block. Silver Rail was replaced by Andre's which was one of the notable LGBT spots in the neighborhood but would eventually transformed into Showman's Jazz bar. Showman's moved a little further west on 125th Street and is still around today but we have yet to find a photo of Andre's at its height of popularity. Can anyone advise on the actually timeline?
The other bar mentioned was Jay's located at 307 West 125th Street which was literally half a block up on the north side of 125th Street. This old tenement building located just west of FDB has a dollar store and a braid shop upstairs today and sits next to the Bingo hall where quite a few Vogue balls were held in the 80s and 90s. There is not much about Jay's to be found online so any information on the time period that the establishment was open would greatly be appreciated.
The Big Apple jazz club debuted at 2300 7th Avenue back in 1934 and the facade would remain at corner of 135th Street until demolition in 2006 to make way for a Popeye's. Apparently the club was open for half a century but nobody really has a date on when it shuttered. Based on past blog comments in regards to recent gay bars in Harlem, the Big Apple might have been one of the establishments open up until 80s or even the 90s.

HarlemBespoke.com 2023
Ulysseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00817576268296958520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2048034911181517049.post-47888399341895481012023-06-27T14:17:00.002-04:002023-06-27T14:17:28.823-04:00CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM IN JULY

When she falls in love with him, Malvolio is sure her ardent displays of unbridled passion and awkward love letters must be a trick. ce=The+Classical+Theatre+of+Harlem+General+List&utm_campaign=151b6a20c4-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2023_06_20_01_50&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-151b6a20c4-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D&mc_cid=151b6a20c4&mc_eid=46b345eba9" target="_blank">LINK

HarlemBespoke.com 2023

Ulysseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00817576268296958520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2048034911181517049.post-85859495593293390102023-06-27T14:17:00.000-04:002023-06-27T14:17:06.269-04:00DWELL: 210 WEST 122ND STREET TOWNHOUSE

Harlem Bespoke: Number 210 West 122nd Street was up for sale before the pandemic with the asking set at $3.7 million and now the listing returned to the market for the spring 2023 season for an upgraded $4.9 million.

As previously mentioned, the location just west of 7th Avenue is ideal because of the proximity to the express trains on 125th Street but potential buyers might want to check out the Certificate of Occupancy since this townhouse was previously an SRO. Apparently everything now is currently set up as a Bed and Breakfast and the listing mentions as much. Everything looks to be in good condition within but there are quite a few bathrooms located on each of the floors because of the hotel situation. A lost treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/ romance. Alarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying—indeed, “becoming extinct,” as she sees it—brash Oakland art student Pica (Toby Smith) attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship (April Barnett), experiencing love and loss, and being drawn into the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. . Harlem Bespoke: We have written a lot about the Langston Hughes House at at 20 East 127th Street over the years but never pulled up an archival photo. The above historic images from the city files show the matching brownstones on the block between Fifth Avenue and Park a few year before the Harlem poet would reside within on the top floor as his workspace.

There was some crazy nonsense about the address being in danger of being demolished if sold over the years but the notable brownstone is an officially designated New York City Landmark as of 1981 and is protected from such actions. Langston Hughes was one of the few luminaries from the Harlem Renaissance that actually stayed in Harlem and lived at this notable address from 1947 to 1967 until the end of his life. Uptown's most famous neighborhood was a political and artistic stepping stone for many celebrities of the day but only those who truly loved this part of upper Manhattan chose to stay permanently. Check out our past post from 10 years ago to see interiors of the home when it was last on the market: LINK

HarlemBespoke.com 2023

Ulysseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00817576268296958520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2048034911181517049.post-11443003707672398662023-06-20T11:18:00.000-04:002023-06-20T11:18:12.512-04:00CELEBRATE: HARLEM PRIDE JUNE 2023
