☞ Shop: Harlem Fairway

Not only does Fairway sell organic goods in Harlem, but it also shows what organic revitalization of a neighborhood looks like (that is, without a forced demolition of historic architecture and rebuilding, as per Columbia's intent). The famed, super wholesale warehouse in Harlem's Manhattanville used to only be a destination for families and locals looking for a deal in this former industrial part of town. Nowadays, new starter families to the neighborhood, Columbia students, yuppies, Europeans and gay couples can be seen soaking in the amazing selection of breads, cheese, specialty smoked meats and pickles that have made this local market renowned in New York City. The proprietor takes pride in the fact that Fairway hand selects their unique assortment of artisanal foods. Another interesting aspect of this particular store is that one-third of it is in a "cold room," which is a refrigerated storage room the size of a small warehouse. Padded Fairway jackets are supplied before you enter if you need something to keep you warm. On the east side of the store, the majestic Manhattanville viaduct rises overhead, and train tracks cover the building's western portion, also the border of the new West Harlem Piers. 2328 12th Avenue between 132nd Street & 133rd Street. Tel.(212) 234-3883. Take the 1 train to 125th street and walk west to the viaduct and north for two blocks.
