☞ WALK: Harlem's Little Mexico
East Harlem has always been the mecca for working class immigrants throughout the decades. In the late 19th century, Jewish and Italian communities migrated to the area and by the 1930's, immigration would bring in the cultures from the Caribbean. Since the 1990's, a rich community of Mexican immigrants has been transforming many parts of the neighborhood. The main street of 116th Street between Lexington and 1st Avenue has become the central commercial thoroughfare where the old and new come together. Quick and cheap taquerias, specialty rotisseries with a multitude of meats, Mexican groceries and bakeries can all be found along the strip with businesses spilling over to the side avenues. Take the 6 train to 116th Street and walk east.
