☞ WALK: The Conservatory Garden
The Central Park Conservatory Garden is technically in East Harlem and very accessible to uptowners. There is a two story high cast iron entrance gate (originally built in 1894 for the Vanderbilts via Paris) that guards this very large and formal garden not unlike those found on grand English estates. The row of late blooming cherry trees greet guests along a great lawn with a curved, trellis-covered esplanade in the back reaches, while three fountains hold separate courts within the gardens. Very romantic and charming for those seeking such environs. The Vanderbilt Gate is located at 5th Avenue and 105th Street. Take the 2,3 Train to 110th Street and walk east, then south. If you're coming from Broadway north of 110th Street, take the M4 bus, getting off across the street from the Museum of the City of New York on Fifth Avenue at 104th Street.
