☞ DWELL: 605 West 147th Street Brownstone

Probably one of the best preserved interiors we have noticed this year belongs to the single family brownstone on 605 West 147th Street between Riverside Drive and Broadway. Restored fireplaces, grand pocket doors, window mouldings and pier mirrors seem to be in perfect condition. The asking price for $1.4 million, even with all the extras, seem to be that of peak market, especially since the location on 147th Street is a bit higher up the hill. The house borders the Hamilton Heights district but is closer to the 145th Street 1 train (which is local) than the Sugar Hill A,B,C,D express station, which is on St. Nicholas Avenue (about a 10 minute walk east). Also the view across the street from the house is quite charming with its complete set of brownstones, but the lot next door to the building seems to be a one-floor garage of some sort. The commercial Broadway district is right around the corner and provides some amenities, but most of them are on the moderate side.

  1. My father, R. Newman Slawson grew up at this address. He was born in 1898. There were 6 children in the family. His family was connected to Sheffield Farms-Slawson-Decker milk pasteurization and delivery business.
