☞ WALK: The Mishkin's Neon Sign at 145th
Walking to the corner of West 145th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, one gets to see a Hamilton Height's landmark that is of the commercial kind. Mishkin's drugstore has been around since 1890 and its retro charms have not faded one bit with its current sign incarnation from the 1950's. The building that houses the store is in need of a polish, but the storefront and the two story high neon sign itself is pretty pristine for the being about half a century old. The nearest subway is the 1 train at 145th Street or those who want to take a look a the coolest apothecary uptown. Photos by Ulysses

I am 55 years old and would walk past this Mishkins every day on my way to school and it still looks like it did back then as it does now.
ReplyDeleteBtw, Ulysses do you think you could find a photo of Bickfords Cafe? It was an Automat style cafe located at the s/e corner of W. 145th St and Broadway, and was a large cafe with ceiling to floor windows, both on W.145 and on Broadway. I would so love to see a photo as I can't find any. Since you so love all things Harlem I thought if any one could find it it would be you!
Hi Sissy,
ReplyDeleteYou are one of our favorites since your insight on Harlem's history is first hand! We'll do our best on the Bickfords research!
