Finally! The ugly, huge swath of land that's been a gigantic open lot from West 127th Street to West 128th Street between St. Nicholas and FDB/8th Avenue will be no more. The city broke ground last week for the Balton (top image), which will be a mixed income building set to open in 2011. Overall, 226 new apartments will be shared between two buildings and there will be 15,000 square feet of commercial retail space on the ground floor. A smaller, sister building called the Douglass Park on the West 128th side of the block, is set for construction in 2010. Another interesting point is that SLCE Architects will be handling this project and they are also the firm involved with the Museum of Modern Arts daring futuristic tower in midtown:

I like the red façade, maybe brick, and it is good to see retail all along both lengths of this building. A building like this goes a long way to uplifting the neighborhood with more disposable income tenants and better retail, thanks for the post.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure this'll be a nice building, the Langston, which is by a different developer, but same property management company is well managed and a nice place to live. They coulda sprung for a designer for a new logo treatmnt though :-)
ReplyDeleteYeah, there's going to be a concierge, a gym and child care center so pretty much everything that is standard in a luxury building will be provided with affordable rent to boot. We also like that the scale is not too high and that the building blends in with the neighborhood but looks updated at the same time.
