☞ REMEMBER: The Harlem Bike Doctor

One of the local stories from last year was how the bike doctor in South Harlem left for Brooklyn after working on the border of the Mount Morris Park Historic District for 35 years. It basically came down to zoning in the area but nobody complained for three decades. Anyways, we walked by the old space on East 124th Street (between 5th and Madison) this weekend and couldn't help feeling slightly sentimental. Read more in our original post: LINK. Photo by Ulysses

  1. Zoning issue for this guy but not for Fifth on the Park which is so huge it casts a looming shadow over Marcus Garvey [Park]?

  2. Actually the rumour is that the owner of the corner brownstone, which is on the market for a ridiculous price, wanted it vacant. It's part of the package.

  3. Most people are still trying to figure out how Fifth on the Park happened. Still goes to show that big money and under the table connections still win out at the end.

  4. “Slack Community Board” is the answer I get. Probably hand in hand with big money and under the table connections. Not mutually exclusive.

I mean, it's a nice enough looking building if it were not for it hovering over the park and a very low rise neighbourhood/

  5. I have lived in HARLEM since I was a young girl now 43. I remember the bike doctor. We gave up so much to gain What? No more drums in MT MORRIS Park as I called it for years, More dog filth in front of houses then I have ever seen in my entire life. Not to mention new comers who won't make eye contact much less smile at old time Black residents. Not the "Oprah Winfrey says the best place to live is Harlem" Black residents who started moving in 15 years ago. It's a disgrace. We how have owned for so long can not afford to stay!!!!!! New zoning, new taxes, higher insurance. Why did we sell out?
