☞ WALK: Return to the Carpenter Houses
When we first covered the carpenter's houses on West 150th Street in Hamilton Heights, we wondered what would happen to the lot next door that seemed to be under construction. All questions were answered when the owner of the two buildings sent us some photos from the past and an inside tip on what's going on now. It turns out the empty lot where the shorter of the two buildings stood was purchased by a developer and a six story, 12 unit condo building will rise in its place. There's more information and interior rendition on the architects website: LINK. See more pictures of this block on our original post: LINK. The building at 461 West 150th Street is between Amsterdam and Convent Avenue. The nearest subways are the A,B,C,D at 145th Street. Archival photo courtesy NYPL.

what is a carpenter's house?
ReplyDeleteThere were several carpenters working on the street in the 1930's and 1940's. Go to the link and read the original post for more information.
ReplyDeleteI checked out the architects website and it looks like he also designed the building going up on St. Nick at 148th. It's great to finally know what is being built in that space!
ReplyDeleteIt would be really great if housing was going up in my community that supported the working class - or working poor based on today's economy. I also don't understand how these designs are approved when they do absolutely nothing to compliment the existing building. They are ugly.
