☞ INTRODUCING: Harlem Village Academy 125th
If you have been wondering about what's happening to the recently closed Con Edison building at 32 West 125th Street (between Lenox and 5th), then guess no longer. The Real Deal reports that, "With up to $42 million in funding from the city's School Construction Authority, HVA (Harlem Village Academy) ultimately plans to open a five-story, 400-student charter school for grades 6 through 12 at the site, according to an agreement also filed today." The article also states that the notably effective, nonprofit charter school purchased the ConEd site for $14.9 million. Read more in the Real Deal: LINK. Photo by Ulysses

Very interesting...sounds good, I think. When will local residents get a glimpse of the proposed structure and when will construction begin?
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong that I would rather have had a Whole Foods?
ReplyDeleteBut, you know, educating kids is good too I suppose.
This is great news for the community. People always say Manhattan lacks the space for more schools. Why not build 'em here AND improve the educational options for people in the community.
ReplyDeleteWhy not place the Whole Foods on 125th and Lenox or where the Victoria 5 stands? Why does it have to be either or, anyway?
ReplyDeleteIt's not an either or. The Whole Foods/Hyatt proposal is for an empty lot.
ReplyDeleteand everyone is working themselves into a tizzy re: Whole Foods which, as far as I can tell, has not expressed any interest in this site whatsoever. Someone’s wish has become reality and a matter for great discussion.
ReplyDeleteThe "tizzy" only expresses the community's eagerness and demand for a Whole Foods...and in business, marketing, politics, etc. generating a "tizzy" is a good thing. It could mean the difference between something happening or not.
ReplyDeleteIs Whole Foods planning ANY new locations in NYC this year? They have had big openings in the past year or two - they may want to see how those are going before embarking on another store. In the meantime, we have Best Yet in south Harlem and it is really good and getting better by the day. I make far fewer trips to Whole Foods at 98/Columbus than I used to.
ReplyDeleteWill there be retail on the first floor?
ReplyDeleteIsn't a Whole Foods planned to be part of the Hyatt Hotel development @ 125th and Lenox? This school can help build "whole persons," which is always a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI vote for a Whole Foods, a school and a Baby's R Us!
