☞ REVIVE: The 125th Viaduct Subway Station
In preparation for the new Manhattanville campus, the 125th Street 1 subway station will apparently get some major restoration work done this year. Back in 2004, the waiting area platforms at top went through window replacement and got a new coat of paint. What was ultimately neglected was the architecturally distinct arches that straddles 125th Street and Broadway along with the rest of the elevated tracks that span a half dozen blocks in this section of West Harlem. We recently received some news that Iron Bridge Constructors have been granted the $7 million MTA contract to repair and paint over the entire support system in the very near future. They have been looking for office space in the area so the project, which will be slated to finish by end of 2010, can be expeditiously complete. She's over 100 years old but this aging beauty is an official NYC landmark so it's about time for a face-lift! See the Iron Bridge Constructors site for more info: LINK. Photos by Ulysses

For me these arches are evocative of the Eiffel Tower.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting and beautiful... and deserves our care and attention.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful news. Iron Bridge Constructors refurbished Highline Park too. To have a newer version of it uptown to compliment the existing West Harlem Park Piers will secure this area as the perfect summer stroll must do.
ReplyDeleteThe big question is what color? The 7 line is getting painted right now to a hideous teal color.
ReplyDeleteGood news but I'm curious about the extent of the renovation. $7 million and a finish date this year doesn't sound like much will be repaired.
