So the cast iron fences were being shipped in yesterday at the Harlem Tavern on 116th Street and FDB/8th Avenue and some of the plywood came down today to reveal more of the outdoor space. As one reader mentioned, things look to be finishing up rather quickly. More photos after the jump including an update from late afternoon.
Upon closer examination by the open area at the 116th Street subway entrance, onlookers can see that the cast iron fences are substantial and very decorative. The low corner brick wall only takes up a portion of the entire area and the cast fence provide privacy and street visibility at the same time.
Looking further north, one can see that the plywood is still up on that corner but all of the fences have been installed at that end. The outdoor furniture is all here so it looks like the beer garden will be making their debut on time. Possibly this weekend?
This is the current photo sent in late in the afternoon. All the plywood is officially down! Click on image to enlarge.
any of you who go please post what you thought. It does indeed look like it's ready to roll out.
ReplyDeletePlease let it be more tavern/pub than beer garden. Coincidently there was a bit in the Times last weekend about the proliferation of beer gardens and how they sorta ovah.
Certainly looking more tavernly than beer gardenly SM. Funny thing is, 99% of the pubs in England would be considered beer gardens since most of them have back gardens and erm, beer.
ReplyDeleteHeresy! They also have fruit machines but they’re not casinos.
ReplyDeleteKnow what you’re saying, though. My old pub was the Princess Alexandra on Portobello Road, sadly no longer there.
Ha, I don't mean it of course. Just funny how the NY Times article labels every bar under the sun as a bier garden. Even Bier International are stretching it a bit ;)
ReplyDeletePortobello Road...I used to help there as a kid. Tough times now unfortunately:

Apparently within the last couple of hours they have actually removed the rest of the plywood @ Harlem Tavern...
ReplyDelete@ Chris. Yeah. I belong to STPRM.
ReplyDeleteMost current photo of the Harlem Tavern just received and uploaded to the post.
ReplyDeleteThis is moving quite rapidly. I get the feeling this place is gonna catch fire...metaphorically.
ReplyDeleteIf they open on a day like today 99 degrees it might be literally too CityDweller :) Man it's hot already!!
ReplyDeleteIt appears that Harlem Tavern was aiming to open this weekend but their Facebook site confirms the opening will likely happen sometimes during the week of June 13th.
