☞ INTRODUCING: Pioneer Opening Soon?

About a year ago it was reported that Pioneer supermarket will be arriving at The Lenox Condos and it now appears that the opening will be happening soon.  A reader sent in the middle photo which shows the arrival of the store merchandise this morning at the location on 129th Street and Lenox Avenue.  The awnings have been up for a few months now but for some reason stocking up the shop has not happened until now.  There were complaints in the past that the new retailer was a little down market but the luxury car dealership that used to be at the space was not such a great idea either: LINK. This space will at least be brand new and provide foot traffic to the block well into the night.

  1. I am a big fan of Wilde Olive Market on 125th street, good inventory, good prices, good attitude, pleasant shopping experience, Pioneer can only beat Wilde Olive Market by being a closer walk for some.

  2. Totally different neighborhood. And demographic And I should imagine their prices are lower, their selection larger. Their aisles wider and kids can run rampant. Does Wild Olive take ebt?

  4. Got a chance to walk by Pioneer this morning and this appears to be an upgrade for the chain. The counters have golden maple wainscot panels on them and the shelving up front was also constructed in a similar wood finish.

If you walk north on Adam Clayton Powell, Lenox, or Fifth from the 125th street subway station, there are no markets until the Associated on Lenox and 133rd. I think this Pioneer will do a very decent business.

  6. Wish it was a few blocks further south! Just me being lazy. Stuck between Best Yet and Pioneer for now. Hopefully they'll do something with the lot on 125th & Lenox and put in a supermarket.

  7. D—dunno really. In my mind Wild Olive caters to those coming home from the 125th /Lex who can’t bear the crowds @Pathmark whereas the Pioneer would be more convenient for people who live up above 125th around Lenox and 7th and 8th and are repelled by the Associated.

  8. I LOVE Wild Olive, but it will be nice to have something on this stretch of Lenox. I peeked through the windows last night and it does look pretty close to ready.

  11. The more supermarkets, the merrier, says I. Wild Olive, Pioneer, Associated. And there's room for more. Also, I wouldn't mind a few more sidewalk fruit vendors on Lenox.

  12. I'll be extremely happy if it is open past 8pm and has decent produce.
Supermarkets like that in central harlem are few and far between.

  13. I've heard it's supposed to be an "upscale" Pioneer, complete with a fish counter, cheese counter, deli, fresh breads, olive bar, organic produce, etc. Anxious for it to open to see if it lives up to the hype of the owner!

  14. I love the Olive Mart and the people there are great! But, I used to live across the street from another Pioneer (73rd and Columbus), so this is all to the good, too!

  15. Great to hear it is upscale, if they are making an effort to bring something nice to uper Lenox, they deserve some support.

  16. Thanks for posting this update, Ulysses - on my way home this evening I walked past the place and I was wondering when if ever if would open.

Pioneer might not be the sort of market we would have hoped for but it won't take much to exceed what Associated offers (as well as the C-Town at 131/Lenox). If it really proves to be an upscale Pioneer, that's a bonus.

  17. just a aside re: upscale markets Olive bars. Now admittedly I am an olivephobe. Lips that touch olives shall never touch mine. But does anyone ever really buy enough olives to make an olive bar sustainable? Does anyone ever go ‘ooh, think I’ll toddle over and see what new offerings are at the olive bar’?

  18. Peeked inside yesterday. Does look much better than your average Pioneer. They say they will open this Wednesday.
