☞ READ: Other Development on 125th Street
The Wall Street Journal reveals that the city is now seeking out developers to build a large office building at an underutilized parking garage located on 125th Street between ACP/7th and Lenox Avenue. This new construction will have over 300,000 square feet of space and could possible include a cultural center. In the past year, the Economic Development Corp. has been able to find developers for the Corn Exchange Building and the Taystee Cake Bakery site on Harlem's main commercial strip but the article also confirms that many companies are starting to migrate south in Lower Manhattan. I dont understand why you'd build on this location - that is already being used at least - and not be able to secure anything for the huge empty lots along 125th (one at the corner of Lenox and the other between Lenox and 5th)
ReplyDeleteHenry, I agree ... why not build across the street first and get a vacant lot developed? I'm not saying the current space is maximum utlization, but at least it's some. I guess the NYC government doesn't own the parcel across the street ...
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the city owned this property.
ReplyDeleteHere's the RFP: http://www.nycedc.com/system/files/rfp/documents/Central%20Harlem%20Mixed%20Use%20RFP.pdf
I swear, if I never read or hear the term "cultural center" again, I will die a happy man.
ReplyDeleteCan't they just get Pizzaria Uno's to rent out the Blockbuster Video space, or something?
At least that would be useful.
lol Vic.
ReplyDelete@ Vic, a Pizzeria UNO or (wait for it) a Red Lobster would be great in that space. I thought that empty lot between 5th and Lenox was for the new hotel?
ReplyDeleteAs for the empty lot on 125 and Lenox, everyone on this site has an idea for that space- from another hotel to a Trader Joes. At this point, I miss the old British Walkers shoe store that used to occupy that space back in the day.
It's such a big lot (corner of Lenox) that i guess they need big things in place before they can develop it. But it really is such a shame nothing has come up. It's been 5 years since they leveled what was left there. The hotel (between 5th and Lenox) is dead i think. There's been no movement in there for quite some time.
