☞ EAT: Mama K's Serves it Up on Sugar Hill

Mama K's over on Sugar Hill finally set up some seating in the small soup and salad shop so we stopped by to chat with the owner and to also try out some of the best turkey chili to be found uptown. This  little bespoke specialty shop on St. Nicholas Avenue by 148th Street makes the soup fresh every day and has at least two vegan options available.  There are usually four soups to choose from which might include Jamaican pumpkin, chipotle sweet potato, West African stewed beef, Caribbean black bean with apple sausage, seafood chowder, Thai coconut chicken, seventeen vegetable soup, chicken noodle, Hawaiian meatball, roast chicken corn chowder, French onion and cheese baguette along with the famed turkey chili (which apparently is the most popular).

We tried the mildly spiced chili at lunchtime and could not say enough about its wholesome goodness which came along with a cornbread biscuit which was culinary event within itself.   Mama K has lived in the neighborhood for several years and set up shop with her husband last summer but originally hails from Japan so a vegetarian sushi with brown rice has recently been introduced.  Now that two cafe tables have arrived, we plan to drop by more often at the unassuming eatery.  Baked desserts are also often offered up and folks should expect homemade ice cream to arrive by summer time.

Soup prices start at $5.99 for a small and $8.00 for a large serving that is well worth the price.  This is a cash only establishment and Mama K's does not deliver so everyone should just drop by during lunch or dinner time to pick up a great healthy meal.  For daily updates, "like" Mama K's on Facebook and receive more details on what's cooking: LINK

    1. It IS Good ! I go often, interesting soups and salads. The couple that run it are professional and pleasant. It is so important that Uptown has an affordable healthy restaurant alternative to all the greasy spoons that surround us ! LOL

Added plus is it is a great way to support local SMALL businesses and support your health at the same time !

Let's hope more of these restaurants will come....

  2. Love Mama K's! Soups are delicious (you can get a sample before you buy) and she has quite a few salad toppings to choose from. The sesame dressing is my favorite.
