☞ ARCHITECTURE: Modern on West 126th Street

A Bespoke reader sent in a tip that the new brownstone facade at 71-73 West 126th Street has now been revealed.  The top photo was taken this weekend and one can see a groovy modern townhouse interpretation has taken over the two buildings which can be seen at their original state at the lower photo.

About 5 years ago, the developer had braced the front facades and a straight forward restoration was pretty much expected by all on the block.  Scaffolding went up a year ago or so and the netting was removed from the buildings just east of Lenox this past week.  This is actually probably more expensive than just refinishing the original front walls and cornice so the developer must think modern will get top dollar.  Thoughts?

  1. Misbegotten. And possibly atrocious.

  2. This could be used as a case study in architectural school on bad architecture.

  3. I'm anti-blight/pro-development, but this is truly butt ugly. Wow. I'm actually shocked.

Yes, though, at least they tried...I guess..

    1. I totally agree. What a shame. This is the ugliest renovation I ever seen in Harlem.

  4. Actually, could have been successful if the glass areas were not so flat.

  5. I think it's an interesting facade but not appropriate for the neighborhood and also not quite for a residence. Perhaps if it were a library or some sort of commercial space.

  6. Are these the 2 buildings that were featured on Million Dollar listing sold by Luis?

    1. Andrew the two buildings that you speak of featured on "Million Dollar Listings NY" are located between 7th(ACB) and Lenox(MXB) just across from the state office building...a former Church resided in that Brownstone. The pictures above are from buildings located between Lenox & 5th Avenues.

  7. This facade is really unattractive to me. Not at all the kind of curb appeal that speaks to me. Not a good move...
