☞ ARCHITECTURE: Knickerbocker Hospital

The dramatic series The Knick is currently filming all over New York City but the namesake Knickerbocker Hospital is actually in West Harlem's Manhattanville neighborhood on Convent and 131st Street.  This period piece will be centered then around the famous Harlem hospital which was founded in 1885 and was named the Knickerbocker by 1913.  At its height, the Knick was a leader in the treatment for polio and also had one of the largest ambulance districts in the city.  Apparently the city closed it down back in the 1980s and it was eventually converted into senior housing.  More photos on the filming of the Knick in our past post: LINK

  1. Came home from work to find signs they are filming in front of our place on St Nicholas at 148. They must be filming in the Bailey house because all of a sudden the scaffolding is down and the house is lit up. It looks amazing. Hope this means the work is done and the scaffolding is gone for good.

  2. Today they are shooting at the Bailey House on St Nicholas and 149. The scaffolding is finally down and the house looks spectacular.

  3. Knickerboker Hospital was also noted for the treatment of Alcoholism in the 1930's. I think AA gets its start there.

    1. Your correct, i have been doing a lot of research on how treatment centers started..

  4. Today (3/3/15) they are at the historic cemetary at 153-155/Amsterdam-Broadway.
