☞ INTRODUCING: A Bagel in Harlem

Back in the early days of blogging, there was a site called A Bagel in Harlem which had a blogger wonder about the likelihood of finding the quintessential New York City gnosh uptown.  Alas the blogger who was actually in East Harlem moved on but the bagel issue still stands today.  Where in Harlem can one get a bagel?

McDonald's has them now during breakfast hours but that is clearly not what we are after.  It turns out that Lenox Coffee at 129th by Lenox Avenue and The Chipped Cup on Broadway at 148th serve up bagels while they last each day.  Even with all the changes that has happened uptown, bagels are still not that common but at least a couple of places are offering them up now.  In our opinion, if an actual bagel shop arrives anytime soon, this would do quite well.

  1. I agree. I come across this issue frequently. Best Yet has bagels that are actually OK and that is where I usually end up, but it is not ideal. If I want a real bagel shop experience, I typically head to the UWS or other parts of the city.

  2. I remember when a bagel was almost impossible to find in Harlem, now they can be purchased at most delis, also Wilde Olive has a great bagel selection. In my opinion, Murray Bagels from downtown would be a great addition to Harlem.

  3. I think one of the reasons we don't have a true bagel shop is there just are not that many opening in the city in general. Feels like most of the ones elsewhere in the city have been around for ages. Bagel shops are like diners in that way. Not to mention they went a little bit out of fashion in the early 2000s with the low carb craze, though clearly we are past that now!

  4. We go over to Absolute Bagels on 108th and Broadway - they are really, really good. But it's kind of a trek! There is definitely a market for bagels in Harlem...

  5. We have written about Absolute Bagels in the past. This shop has one of the best bagels in town but alas is on the outskirts of the upper West Side. They should open a Harlem branch!

  6. Fairway has the best bagels. We buy extra when we're there and freeze them…
