REVIVE: PABST BEER GARDEN BUILDING UP FOR LEASE
The Daily News has a story on the Pabst Beer Garden property which is apparently up for a 99-year lease. This would also include major developers if affordable housing is provided but the fate of the substantial building facing the 124th Street side of the property is unclear. If any individual landmark should be given in Harlem's current history, Pabst should be on the list since it was the city's largest beer hall before prohibition shut things down in the 1920s. Another great outcome would be to generate the housing on the 125th side which has been altered over the decades and actually revive the beer garden as a community or commercial space. Or revive the beer garden as a a beer garden to rival the Standard and the Astoria beer gardens?
ReplyDeleteBeer garden plus restaurant in pabst space, apartments on 125th with access from 124th street (nicer feel), nice bookstore on 125th street that serves coffee. Dream with me folks!
ReplyDeleteMedium scale live performance space similar to Bowery Ballroom or Knitting Factory?
ReplyDeleteit's interesting that the historic building is being offered in conjunction w the 125th retail building. from the daily news photo it does not appear these two buildings are contiguous. hopefully whoever develops this, has the sense to limit contemporary interventions to the 125th side and really play-up the historic potential for the pabst building ... could be amazing.
