REVIVE: NEW CORNICE AT 801-807 ST. NICHOLAS
We walked by 801-807 St. Nicholas Avenue by 150th Street yesterday and noticed that the renovations at the corner prewar apartment building is coming along quite nicely. Even more interesting is that the 40-unit affordable complex has now added back the missing cornice with a brand new model. The government programs to help rehabilitate older buildings have gone the extra mile in many cases to replace this crucial missing design element but at the end of the day it all makes since the overall concept is a complete restoration of the neighborhood. A building this size probably had a more elaborate crown at top when first built but this classic dentil style still works as an affordable replacement.
