☞ DRINK: Billie's Black

If Bessie Smith were around today, she would head over to the happy hour at Billie's Black. Drinks in the new establishments of central Harlem seem to be as expensive as downtown, so if one does not have the extra change, come early for the half price specials. The space is narrow and intimate, but the warm brick with vibrant green accent walls provide a comforting and familiar space to enjoy some Southern food with weekly, live jazz entertainment. 271 West 119th Street between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and St. Nicholas Avenue. Tel. 212-280-2248. Website: billiesblack.com
