☞ VOYAGE: Governor's Island
Summer time is here, and that usually means weekends taken as day trips to get away from it all. To get to Governor's Island from Harlem, it only takes a half-hour ride on the train and then ten minutes on a ferry. Starting in June, there are many free events that happen on the Island, with the Jazz Age Lawn Party to kick things off. The best way to see the island is to get a bicycle that is available for rent upon arrival, though you can also take a stroll around the grounds. The last three photos show the diversity of buildings to be found, including large government facilities, naval cottages and old castle forts from the 19th and early 20th century. The Island was a headquarters to Coast Guard officials and their families but has since been abandoned for such use, and New York City has made it into a very cool recreational park for the summertime. There are also amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island while riding on the perimeter of Governor's Island. Take the 1 train to the South Ferry Stop and leave the station to board the Governor's Island Ferry Station (top photo), which leaves every hour. Every Friday, bike rentals are free on the Island.
